Night and Day
Night and Day was composed in 2021. It was selected as a finalist for the Australian Women's Wind Band Composition Award in 2021, and was premiered by the Queensland Wind Orchestra in 2022.
Duration: c. 4 minutes 30 seconds
Approximate Grade: 3.5
Night and Day consists of two main sections - the first incorporating a slow and minor theme
with moments of both tension and playfulness, which represents different elements of the night. This section
aims to have a sense of calmness and mystery throughout.
The second section is an energetic, major and bright theme that represents the day, with an upbeat and joyous sound. This section utilises elements of a march, with fast running quavers and loud dynamics.
These sections aim to highlight the contrasts between night and day time through changes in mood, tonality, tempo and style. It aims to feature a number of sections in the band throughout the work, and explores a range of tone colours and textures to reflect this theme.
